Just like frothing egg whites for meringue, it doesn't work with oil or fat in it. I use skim milk and found that it froths easier than 1% or 2%. I gently pour in the coffee and usually get at least a half inch of frothy milk. I wanted something easy and fast and easy to clean. Yum. And the milk has to be hot to work well.
Makes all the difference in the world with the frothy milk. I bought 3 of these Aerolatte Milk Frothers at Christmas-for me and my 2 daughters-and because my second cappuccino machine is just like the first--clogged steamer/frother way too easily. Although, I had to work a little on the technique, I am finding this is just the answer to the question of frothed milk. Anyway, while my machine is making the coffee, I am heating the milk in my cup in the microwave and then froth the milk in the cup.
The next morning I was really excited to make a vanilla cappuccino (add some vanilla to warm milk and froth, pour espresso through froth) but, alas, all I got was the whirlpool of milk again. Once I figured all this out my happiness went through the ceiling and it's getting 5 stars. you must keep the Aerolatte shaft angled to get the froth formed. Why isn't this mentioned in the instructions.
All I got was a whirlpool of milk and a 1/4" of foam. After a quick wash, I poured a half glass of 1% milk, stuck the whipper in and turned it on (it comes with batteries). Bingo. My espresso went cold, my vanilla milk went cold, and my patience ran out. Wow. Angled. Argh.
It was dinner time so I put it down and went to the table. So, this is how I do it: Put the thing into the liquid, to the bottom, lift it up a little, turn it on and tilt very very close to the edge while keeping the whipper in the middle of the cup and *poof* froth almost immediately. The whole glass (1% milk no less) filled with micro bubbles. Nothing.
Ugh. It was thick enough that when the glass was tilted over at around a 60 degree angle nothing came out. What happened last night at the dinner table that was not happening this morning. I haven't done anything with whole milk, half and half, or heavy cream but I'm sure this technique will work.
I received my Aerolatte yesterday and was very excited. My son had 1/2 a glass of milk left and I couldn't resist trying again so I brought the Aerolatte to the table and tried again. There is a very simple, very secret trick that MUST be employed for this thing to work.
Expect 2 double A batteries to last about a month, using 1-2 times a day. Very similar to "caffe con leche" in Spain. Just purchased my second aerolatte (first lasted 3 years before it started running down batteries too fast). Excellent for frothing steamed milk (I put 8 ounces in microwave on high for 1 minute), then froth. Product has been reliable --but does take some "touch" to avoid spraying milk around the kitchen.
Feels a little cheap, but since it's been working lately, I really can't complain - yet. Then after about a week or so began working again. Works good. Stopped working after a couple of weeks. It's been working for the last 3-4 weeks now.
sometimes it seems to have not enough power, but that might be a normal. works good. I would buy it again.
